Feed additives hold enormous potential for reducing the environmental impact of the farming sector, but are not getting the attention they deserve according to farming sector and feed industry stakeholders, who are calling for more focus on the role of feed additives in contributing to sustainability goals.

“Feed additives is most probably one of the important factors [for sustainability] and a new factor that most people outside the agriculture sector do not necessarily recognise,” Pekka Pesonen, secretary-general of EU farmers association COPA-COGECA, highlighted during a recent EURACTIV event.

New Publication – Sustainability governance of Canada’s agriculture-based bioeconomy | Bioenergy

This report, produced in the framework of IEA Bioenergy Task 43 (biomass supply), provides a current Canadian perspective on how the sustainability of the agricultural bioeconomy is governed.

In Canada, the agricultural bioeconomy (in which  agricultural biomass is used as feedstock to produce energy, fuels, chemicals, and bio-based materials) is still emerging with liquid biofuels and biogas production being at commercial scale while many other types of bioproducts are still in the R&D and pilot stages of innovation. To date, the dominant feedstocks supplying the bioeconomy are grain corn, canola oil, wheat, soy oil, used cooking oil, animal fat, dairy manure, and food processing waste.

Following a year like no other that saw eCommerce hurled five years ahead of its time, 2021 is set to see emerging eCommerce trends that will centre around preparing for the unpredictable, says global eCommerce platform provider Kooomo,

Sustainable Studying

Sustainable Studying

At UWTSD we are committed to sustainability and strive to adopt a green approach at every opportunity. If you, like us, believe in moving towards a greener future, you might enjoy these ideas for more sustainable study. Get involved! Taking notes in lectures If you’re concerned by the amount of paper you’re getting through in lectures, try a free app like Evernote. Evernote is a note-taking app which allows you to hand-write, draw or type, add audio recordings, links and attachments for thorough and efficient lecture notes. It will give you a great deal of flexibility, letting you adopt whatever method best suits your learning style. Another bonus is that your notes will stay as they are. They won’t become untidy or crumpled and they’ll all be kept in one place permanently, which will undoubtedly come in handy over exam periods. It is a brilliant solution for paper waste, and definitely worth a try. If you enjoy sharing your notes with friends on your course, a platform like Evernote or OneDrive will make collaboration easy. Cut down on post-it notes Whether you use them to create to-do lists, bookmarks, or like to plaster your flat with them during revision, we’re all guilty of using hundreds of post-it notes over the course of our studies. Instead, why not adopt a paperless approach? Download an app like Google Keep onto your device to categorise your thoughts and filter using colour. It’s easy to use, and will synchronise across your devices so that your ideas are always within reach. If you’re a visual learner, this might be the perfect revision tool for you. If there’s something you’re particularly struggling with, why not set your notes as the lock screen on your phone? You’ll soon absorb that information! Use the Online Library UWTSD’s Online…

An update on our work on sustainable food systems

An update on our work on sustainable food systems

Update on our work on sustainable food systems by Francesco Rampa, Head of ECDPM’s Sustainable food systems team Dear Francesco, I hope that this message finds you and your family well and that you’re keeping safe. Although vaccines against COVID-19 are being developed at an impressive speed, the social and economic effects of the pandemic will linger much longer. If anything, 2020 and the exceptional situation we found ourselves in reminded us that, no matter how distant, communities around the world are connected. In 2021, we need to build back our food systems better, not only to avoid more health crises but also because of looming challenges such as climate change, malnutrition, poverty, inequality and biodiversity loss. Our team continues to work for a positive change towards sustainable food systems in Europe and Africa. Here is what has kept us busy over the last months. We wrote a guide on the concept and practice of a sustainable food systems approach to help practitioners and decision-makers to handle the complexity and move towards more coherent, effective and context-appropriate interventions for the necessary transformations. The guide came in handy also when discussing the design and adoption of a sustainable food system approach for Irish official development assistance. While Ireland’s development policy recognises the need for systemic responses to the challenges posed by unsustainable food systems, this has not been integrated into any of the country’s development strategy or operations yet. In an upcoming paper, we will put forward a three-year plan to integrate the sustainable food system approach into Irish strategy and operations – keep an eye out in the coming months! In the search for the sustainability of food systems, trade can either help or hinder the process. Together with the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food), we…
