, 3 lessons from Finland on transitioning to a circular economy, TheCircularEconomy.com In 2016, under the leadership of the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, Finland was the first country in the world to prepare a national circular economy roadmap. This roadmap provided a plan to move the country away from a ‘make-take-waste’ linear economy model to one that protects resources and eliminates waste along value chains.

The roadmap has proven a strong tool in starting a circular change and creating a strong commitment throughout the Finnish society. Thanks to the roadmap, the country could take clear steps for a circular transition and compile key stakeholders’ views on the essential changes and actions required for the circular transformation. Today, Finland has a variety of ongoing circular economy activities in several sectors, a governmental program for advancing circular economy, and the highest number of circular economy higher education courses in the world.

Older hardware consumes much more power than newer technologies. Upgrade when you can and take care in how you recycle your old equipment. Computers often contain dangerous chemicals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic that must be disposed of properly. Here are some ways you can recycle your old gear: UW computers and other electronics hardware can be turned over to UW Surplus Property. Personal property can be dropped off at businesses participating in the E-Cycle Washington program, which provides recycling of computers, monitors, laptops, and televisions, often at no charge. Information about participating businesses in Washington State is available at the Recycle Hotline site or by calling 1-800-RECYCLE.

Lyft’s IPO filing reveals there’s still a long road to sustainable transportation | Greenbiz

Lyft’s co-founders Logan Green and John Zimmer — two entrepreneurs with environmental-leaning and transportation-planning(ish) backgrounds — finally “made it” in the Silicon Valley sense. On Friday, the ride-hailing company filed an S-1, indicating that it plans to go public soon. This particular document is often times the first glimpse at a private company’s financials and overall plans, and Lyft’s S-1 doesn’t disappoint. The main thing that the S-1 reveals to me is the yawning gap between the founders’ vision of Lyft as a sustainable transportation company and the reality that Lyft faces in operating a ride-hailing company that relies on individual gas-powered vehicles in an ultra-competitive market. Lyft’s founders write: “It’s time to redesign our cities around people, not cars.”
