At its the heart the circular economy is about transforming how materials are used and produced to eliminate wastage. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) points to its goal of ‘closing the loop between raw materials, products and wastes so that materials remain in use and consumption of finite resources is reduced’. While countries and sectors would likely say something similar, the lack of an ‘internationally-agreed definition’ is slowing down progress in ‘designing informed strategies’, the UNECE said.

Because the majority of OEMs are struggling to sell battery electric vehicles (BEVs) on a large scale, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) look like a major lever.
UBS bank is tasking its sustainable and impact investment boss a bigger chunk of responsibility for its efforts in the area. The move comes after UBS’ new CEO defined it as a pillar of his strategy. Zurich-based UBS is naming Michael Baldinger as its first sustainability chief, effective from June, it said in a statement on Wednesday. Baldinger, an ex-CSFB proprietary trader, already holds a very similar role at UBS, but the new set-up appears to grant him a bigger say in the wider bank’s organization.
