The Treasury will issue its first sovereign green bond “in the second half of this year,” as announced by Pablo de Ramón-Laca, Director General of the Treasury and Financial Policy. He revealed this in his opening speech at the Ofiso 2021 Annual Meeting on Sustainable Finance, which was recently held in virtual format. De Ramón-Laca explained that this first bond will form part of the Treasury’s Green Bond Issuance Programme, which aims to be a “structural component of the Treasury’s financing policy.” He also announced a National Sustainable Finance Plan, on which an inter-ministerial working group chaired by the Vice-President and Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, is already working.

In mid-April, nearly 150 local environmentalists marched to the gates of Greenidge Generation, a bitcoin mining facility in upstate New York, in a last-ditch effort to block its expansion. Their objection: that the creation of the cryptocurrency, an energy-intensive process in which computers compete to solve mathematical puzzles, may harm efforts to limit global warming. Three days later, the planning board in the small town of Torrey voted 4-1 to allow Greenidge Generation to more than double the number of machines it has mining bitcoin.

The Paris climate goals, the European Green Deal and the Energy Union Strategy call for a climate-neutral economy and society by mid-century. For this to happen, our energy system must be profoundly transformed: from electricity and heat to transport and industry. That is why it is particularly important that different actors – such as companies and households – actively participate in the energy transition.
