Startup company NUMiX Materials has developed a technology it hopes will provide a missing link in the metals supply chain to promote a circular economy.
Xavier Duran has noticed a change in the students applying for MBAs at Alliance Manchester Business School in recent years: a growing interest in sustainability and responsible business practices. “In the late 1990s, they came with a totally different set of expectations, when the MBA was a passport to jobs in consultancy, finance or banking,” says the director of MBA programmes. “Now, we find more and more applicants from the third sector who want business and management skills to mobilise in non-governmental groups and international organisations.”
Eating a plant-based diet is not just good for our health; it is good for Earth’s health. In fact, “Shifting away from animal-based foods [could not only] add up to 49% to the global food supply without expanding croplands;” but would also significantly reduce carbon emissions and waste byproducts that end up in our oceans and as seafood byproducts. If each and every person in the United States gave up meat and dairy products on one or more days of the week; ideally, all days of the week, we would save the environment from thousands of tons of carbon emissions. In fact, in one year, animal husbandry creates as much carbon emissions as the entire transportation sector.

What drives you to be an active and engaged EESC and NAT Section Member? How do you make the link with your work (and your life) back home? I believe that if you want to improve things in life, instead of complaining with your friends and family or debating on social media, you should tell your opinion to those who have the power to take decisions and activate change. And this is precisely the role of the EESC, to give civil society a loud voice, so why not grasp the opportunity? The core issues of the NAT section, especially the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are very close to my heart and the demands of my trade union. Every single one of the SDGs is what we’ve always fought for. Now we have the opportunity to put the SDGs high on the agenda and to push for their implementation.
