This post is a humble plea to help be part of the solution to a problem that is much bigger than any of us… the growing amount of plastic in the ocean. We’ve known for a while some of the health issues related to plastic use, and now the environmental concerns are becoming increasingly alarming.
A new Grand Council Treaty 3 education program is taking on climate change with an action-based approach. Kiizhik School is one of 12 partner schools taking part in the Teaching Our Keepers program, a holistic and science-based education component that will teach Anishinaabe students about climate change, its effects on traditional ways of life and how to combat it.
The award, approved by the prime minister, honours businesses that have improved productivity, quality, performance, and significantly contributed to society and sustainable economic development in all areas. Vietnam president Montri Suwanposri, vice president Vu Anh Tuan, and assistant vice president Worawit Arunraksa attended the ceremony, receiving flowers and a certificate from the chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) Vu Tien Loc, under the witness of Vice State President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh and representatives of ministries and agencies.
While it is generally assumed that ecosystems, such as mangroves, coral reefs or sand dunes, play an important role in reducing risks from hazard events, there are few comprehensive studies that gather scientific evidence on the services these ecosystems provide, and the functions they fulfill for disaster risk reduction. The newly published article “Scientific evidence for ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction” in Nature Sustainability addresses this knowledge gap. 28 experts from different disciplines, including 6 authors from UNU-EHS, joined forces for a review of 529 English-language peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2019 on topics related to ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR).
