The construction of buildings and infrastructure is one of most important human production activities. Today, an important share of conventional materials used in civil engineering are produced from non-renewable fossil resources (e.g., cement concrete, binders, fibers, reinforcements, geotextiles, composite materials). Hence, massive amounts of non-renewable resources and energy are consumed globally.
