Central Sustainability, a Central Michigan University student initiative, has been awarded a 2021 Student Sustainability Leadership Award by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Central Sustainability is being recognized for their work over the past two years, including developing the 2020 Central Sustainability Campus Survey Report and other data collection efforts, creating the Sustainable Purchasing Policy for CMU, helping to create and lead the CMU Earth Week Conference and several other events, creating educational resources for students and the public, and more.
China Liyang Tea Festival and Tianmu Lake Tourism Festival simultaneously kicked off in Liyang, a city in Jiangsu Province in Southeast China on April 10, marking the 30th year since the tea culture was first celebrated in 1991. Celebrations will run for a month, all themed around the “Year of Ecological Quality Consolidation and Improvement”, and to highlight the wonderful vitality, leisure and entertainment of Liyang, a series of tea-related activities will be held focusing on culture, tourism, technology, economy and trade as well as publicity and promotion. The opening ceremony was also innovatively broadcast live across multiple online channels.
With an initiative funded by the KOREA-AFRICA ECONOMIC COOPERATION (KOAFEC) focused on waste management, the African Development Bank aims to accelerate the circular economy in Africa, a model which aims to minimize waste and maximize value from resources through the recovery and regeneration of products at the end of their typical service life. The rationale for the initiative, entitled “ Development of a Green Growth Investment Program in Africa focused on waste management and the circular economy,” is that waste management constitutes one of the major developmental challenges for Africa. It has serious potential consequences in terms of environmental quality, public health, fisheries, agriculture, and sustainable development. The expected outcome of the KOAFEC intervention is a stronger enabling environment for sustainable waste management and circular economy activities. This will be delivered through an enhanced policy and regulatory framework, capacity building and resource mobilization activities.
