Delivering more and better homes is a top priority for Central and Local Government; ensuring the quality and mix of tenure and affordability. The recent Planning for the Future white-paper proposals aims to simplify the planning process and facilitate increased housing delivery across the UK. This draft document has been met with opposition and controversy from various stakeholders; including around community-engagement.
A collaboration between a renewable oil producer and a UK-based plastic recycling specialist is seeking to “revolutionise the way that plastic waste is treated around the globe”. In mid-August Teesside-based ReNew ELP and Finnish refinery giant Neste signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will see both companies work together to capitalise on the value of waste plastic as a raw material feedstock for the production of liquid hydrocarbons, chemicals and new plastics. In Europe, around 27 million tonnes of post-consumer plastic waste is generated each year. Approximately a third is currently collected for recycling, with the remainder either landfilled, incinerated or dumped, polluting vulnerable ecosystems.
In Pennsylvania, the Derry Township Municipal Authority (DTMA) has taken a big step on its journey toward energy and nutrient recovery from organic waste at its Clearwater Road Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF). Ongoing upgrades at the five million-gallons-per-day WWTF are part of a $12 million biosolids facility improvements program. (Source: Brown and Caldwell) Already accepting organic waste from industrial and municipal sources, and with plans to receive future additional waste streams, the DTMA has a long-term vision to recover and reuse resources, reduce landfill waste, and generate alternate revenue sources to lessen the financial burden to customers.
