The big blue buildings of Ikea have sprouted solar panels and wind turbines; inside, shelves are stocked with LED lighting and recycled cotton. Why? Because as Steve Howard puts it: “Sustainability has gone from a nice-to-do to a must-do.” Howard, the chief sustainability officer at the furniture…
On March 30, 2022, the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) and Johnson Controls signed an agreement that commits more than $125 million (CAD) to accelerate private sector decarbonization building retrofit projects across Canada. As originally documented in the 2002 book, The Restoration Economy, the retrofitting of existing buildings is almost always far more green than demolishing old buildings and constructing anew. “Investments in building retrofits are key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reaching Canada’s target of net zero emissions by 2050. The CIB’s investment will enable Johnson Controls to provide participating organizations the expertise and solutions they need to make their buildings more sustainable while creating hundreds of high-quality jobs in the skilled trades,” said Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities.
The circular economy can be defined as an ideal, zero-waste economy where the materials we use every day follow a closed-loop, circular journey that starts with manufacturing and utilization and then moves into reuse, repair, redistribute, refurbish, remanufacture and sometimes compost. With a circular economy, everything comes back and is used again in one form or another, minimizing or completely eliminating landfills and incineration. The circular economy differs from the existing linear economy, where things are produced, used and then some things can be reused or recycled, but some things end up in the landfill, oceans or other places they don’t belong. Some types of plastics are especially problematic in terms of recycling, but increasingly, manufacturers are becoming more conscious of the materials they’re producing and using to ensure that they can either be recycled, reused or composted.
Tom Giddings, general manager of Alupro, discusses the waste and resources sector’s ‘hot topics’ and explores both the hurdles and opportunities that could be in store for 2022. Over the past 18-months, the world has experienced a series of economic challenges that would previously have been considered almost unimaginable. And yet, during what has been a hugely challenging period, the waste management supply chain has shown fantastic resilience. In 2020, for example, while a significant volume of aluminium packaging was placed on the market, the sector exceeded targets and reached its best ever recycling rate.
