The desire for sustainable products is an ever-expanding global trend, which has slowly permeated all areas of commerce over the past few years. This trend has traversed disciplines and marketplaces, from the food and drinks industry to fashion. And health and beauty is no exception. There are four key consumer macro trends that seem to stand out within the industry.
The first: ‘Clean beauty’. This movement gathered momentum in 2019 and has really gained traction in 2020, with lots of huge brands partnering with sustainable beauty brands. A great example is Ultra Beauty who recently announced a partnership with clean retailer Credo and will now feature brands such as Innersense Organic Beauty and One Love Organics.
Veolia Water Technologies, a subsidiary of the Veolia group and leading specialist in water treatment, announces the Asia Pacific launch of the Barrel™, an integrated plug-and-play reverse osmosis (RO) technology. The Barrel will be showcased at the upcoming CleanEnviro Summit Singapore (18-21 April) and OzWater 2022 trade exhibition in Brisbane, Australia (10-12 May). With increasing demand for fresh water and rising concerns over scarcity in the region, the Barrel meets the challenges and expectations of the desalination market while producing fresh water complying with all water quality standards. It is also suitable for wastewater reuse and low pressure RO applications. The Barrel will empower users with an economically viable and sustainable source of fresh water.
With the increase in research on the circular economy system, the basic income and circular economy relationship has also started to be considered. For example, this relationship was examined in the article ‘‘How could a Basic Income support a Circular Economy?’’ published on the Basic Income Network Scotland website on 23 July 2019. In fact, this article is based on the transcript of an interview between Timothea Armor, Basic Income Network Scotland Editor, and Teja Hudson, a zero waste consultant and founder of Zero. The current system of capitalism, free markets, and endless growth, according to Hudson, disappoints us socially. She points out that there are many people who want to make the world a better place, but this disappointment forces them to struggle just to survive. Therefore, she claims that we have lost many bright and creative minds due to preventable social inequalities such as poverty, hunger, disease, gender inequality, persecution, violence and lack of education. Finally, she suggests we need social change, and these people represent a great untapped potential for that social change.
